Production Design – Script Breakdown Assignment

Good Morning World! Unfortunately this will be my very last post about Production design, as of June 3rd, we had our final class for the term 😦

Miss E, you were a fantastic lecturer and I can say i have definitely left your lecturer well endowed with new knowledge and a new perspective on the world around me. At least now you can have some peace and quiet for a few weeks XD

Now enough about that sadness mambo jumbo, lets get down to what this post is meant to be about. This will be my final assignment for production design, it is a breakdown of the script that our term project is based on. I hope you enjoy the read as well as the visuals 🙂

Script Break Down

Location

Interior – Bedroom – This will be created by making use of the built flat units located in the cinematography lecture room.

Exterior – Café court yard – This environment will be created by making use of the stone/concrete tables outside the canteen area on AFDA campus.

Time Period

All scenes will be taking place during the day.

Architectural Elements

The architectural elements of the bedroom will be the bed, with a blanket and pillow. Along with a bedside table which has self-help books on it as well as a lamp. There will also be photos of the protagonist on the wall beside her bed. This indicates the small living quarters of a student.

The Architectural elements of the Café court yard will consist of tables being covered in table clothes as having a condiments holder for the props which would be the salt, pepper and other sources.

Props

There will be no props in the bed scenes, all the props will belong in the Café scene. The props are as follows:

Crockery – Plates and Mugs.

Cutlery – Knives, forks and spoons.

Condiments – Salt, pepper, mustard, tomato source, sugar

Colour Pallet

The colour pallet of our term project will consist of blue, yellow, brown, orange, pink, red and green.

The blue will be used to show the protagonists sadness, self-doubt and inner turmoil.

The Yellow will be used to show the protagonists cowardice and critical judgement of themselves.

The brown is used in an ironic sense of being used with yellow and blue as brown shows a sense of security and stability whereas the other colours which surround the protagonist suggest the opposite. The brown is also used for its sense of lack of sophistication which is something our protagonist feels due to being out of place within the culture she was born into and not having knowledge of another from experience.

The use of Red on the protagonist is to create an energetic and vibrant feeling. This is due to them taking on their mask of being a woman that society would accept. It represents assertiveness, confidence and courage, qualities our protagonist does not display behind closed doors.

The use of pink will be for the representation of femininity.

The orange is to bring out a sense of self-confidence, optimism, cheerfulness amongst other positive and reinforcing elements which will be displayed in the instance the protagonist stops running from who they really are and comes to accept themselves.

The green is in the form of a mug which will be held by the antagonist. This is to symbolise them as being the poison in the protagonist’s life, holding them back from coming to self-actualization due to being judgemental and the protagonist caring about what their friend thinks about them.

The Stylistic Approach

The stylistic approach to the narrative is that of a modern era approach. This can be shown through the usage of colour images on the protagonist’s wall and the lamp on their bedside table. This can also be seen in the Café scene with cell phones visible on the table.

The protagonist’s sociological aspects are difficult to discern, as the protagonist is not a person that enjoys socialising much but forces themselves to do it in order to fit in with society due to their own insecurity and inner conflict. They are impressionable and have a regard for what certain people think, as the protagonist finds it difficult to talk about their problem with their own best friend due to the judgemental remark their friend had passed about women desiring women.

The design of the environment and the characters themselves reflect on their cultural relevance in the way that the protagonist is forcing themselves to wear clothing and style themselves in a way that would suit the culture they were born into and not the culture they wish to be a part of.

Cultural relevance is established through constant representations of balance and the theme of finding self-actualisation due to this being something that the homosexual culture and within that the transgender subculture often struggling to find within our modern day society.
